EU Residence and Family
The citizens of the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland have the right to enter, reside and work in Spain without the need for a residence authorisation. However, for stays longer than three monthsit is necessary to register and obtain a residence certificate or, in the case of their family members, apply for a residence card.
The Royal Decree 240/2007 regulates these residences, establishing the requirements and procedures for legal residence in Spain.
EU CITIZENSHIP REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE
WHAT IS IT?
It is a mandatory document for EU, EEA or Swiss citizens residing in Spain for more than 3 months.
WHAT IS IT FOR?
It allows you to live and work legally in Spain without restrictions.
MAIN REQUIREMENTS
- Be an employee or self-employed person in Spain, or be able to show proof of sufficient financial means so as not to be a burden on the state.
- To have public or private health insurance.
- In the case of students, demonstrate enrolment in an educational establishment and health insurance.
CERTIFICATE OF PERMANENT RESIDENCE OF AN EU CITIZEN
WHAT IS IT?
Document issued to EU citizens who have resided in Spain. legally and continuously for 5 years.
WHAT IS IT FOR?
It grants right to reside in Spain indefinitely and facilitates access to social benefits.
REQUIREMENTS
- To be credited to continuous residence in Spain for 5 years.
- Not having been outside the country for prolonged periods of time.
RESIDENCE CARD OF A FAMILY MEMBER OF AN EU CITIZEN
WHAT IS IT?
It is a card for family members non-EU citizens of EU, EEA or Swiss citizens residing in Spain.
WHAT IS IT FOR?
It grants the right to reside and work in Spain by 5 years.
WHO CAN APPLY?
- Spouses or registered partners.
- Children under 21 years of age or dependent adults.
- Parents in charge of the EU citizen.
MAIN REQUIREMENTS
- Proof of the family relationship.
- Demonstrate that the EU citizen meets the financial requirements.
- Health insurance.
PERMANENT RESIDENCE OF A FAMILY MEMBER OF AN EU CITIZEN
WHAT IS IT?
It is granted to family members of EU citizens who have resided in Spain. for at least 5 years with your initial card.
WHAT IS IT FOR?
Brinda indefinite residence and grants similar rights to Spanish citizens.
REQUIREMENTS
- Have been residing in Spain together with the EU citizen for 5 years continuous.
- Proof of the family relationship.
